  5. Welcome to Adobe Acrobat(R) Reader software--Version 3.0
  6. This guide tells you how to install Acrobat Reader on your Sun(R), HP,  
  7. Silicon Graphics(R), or IBM RISC System/6000(R) workstation.
  8.  
  9. Acrobat Reader is part of the Adobe Acrobat family of software, which lets 
  10. you view, distribute, and print documents in Portable Document Format 
  11. (PDF)--regardless of the computer, operating system, fonts, or application 
  12. used to create the original file.  PDF files retain all the formatting, 
  13. fonts, and graphics of the original document, and virtually any 
  14. PostScript(TM) document can be converted into a PDF file.  PDF files can be 
  15. created using the Acrobat Distiller(TM) program; on Macintosh(R) and 
  16. Windows(R) systems, they can also be created using the Acrobat PDF Writer 
  17. printer driver.  On all platforms, you can use Acrobat Exchange to 
  18. enhance PDF files with links and bookmarks and to make PDF files display
  19. quicker over the World Wide Web.

  21. To install Acrobat Reader on your workstation, you must be familiar with 
  22. basic UNIX commands. If you are not, please consult with your system 
  23. administrator before beginning this installation.

  57. System requirements and limitations
  58. -----------------------------------
  59.  
  60. To use Acrobat Reader software, you need the following minimum hardware and 
  61. software:
  62.  
  63. If you're using a Sun SPARCstation(R):
  64.  
  65. * SunOS(TM) 4.1.3 or later, or Solaris(R) 2.3, 2.4, or 2.5  operating system 
  66.   software (Acrobat Reader will not run under Solaris 2.0, 2.1, or 2.2.)
  67.   
  68. * OpenWindows(TM) (version 3.0 or later), Motif(TM) window manager (1.2.3 or 
  69.   later), OpenLook version 3.0, or Common Desktop Environment (CDE) 1.0
  70.   and above
  71.  
  72. * 12 megabytes of available hard disk space 
  73.  
  74. * A 32 megabyte machine
  75.  
  76.  
  77. If you're using an HP workstation:
  78.  
  79. * 9000 series workstation model 700 or 800

  110. Upgrading from Acrobat 2.1
  111. --------------------------
  112.  
  113. The Acrobat Reader installation script installs the Reader files into a new 
  114. directory.  If you have an earlier version of the Reader software, it is 
  115. not removed automatically.  For more information on removing the files, see 
  116. "Removing Acrobat Reader Software."
  117.  
  118. If you installed Acrobat 2.1 on your Silicon Graphics workstation, you can
  119. remove the Acrobat 2.1 software using the IRIX Software Manager.
  120.  
  121. PREPARING FOR INSTALLATION
  122. ==========================
  123.  
  124. Before beginning the installation, decide where to install the Acrobat 
  125. Reader files.  The following sections describe the installation options.  
  126. Review these sections carefully before installing the software.
  127.  
  128.  
  129. Local versus network installation
  130. ---------------------------------
  131.  
  132. Determine whether a local (stand-alone workstation) or network 
  133. installation is more appropriate for your situation.  
  134.  
  135. For local installation: A local installation guarantees access to the 
  136. software from a workstation and may significantly improve performance, 
  137. depending on how much activity there is on the network. To install Reader 
  138. on your workstation, you must have write permission to the directory where
  139. the Reader software is to be installed.
  140.  
  141. For network installation: A network installation makes administrative and 
  142. maintenance tasks easier, particularly when many users want to access the 
  143. software concurrently. (The number of concurrent users on different 
  144. workstations is determined by how many licenses have been purchased and 
  145. installed.) It is easier to upgrade a single copy of software installed on 
  146. a server than to upgrade multiple copies installed on stand-alone 
  147. workstations.
  148.  
  149. Note: Network installation should be performed by a system or network 
  150. administrator.
  151.  
  152. If you perform a network installation, you will need to find appropriate 
  153. network locations for the installation directory. The software should be 
  154. installed on a network server machine with high reliability. In addition, 
  155. the installation files should be placed in a location that is remotely 
  156. mounted at the same location on all machines.
  157.  
  158.  
  159. Choosing an installation directory
  160. ----------------------------------
  161.  
  162. Locate a directory and verify that you have sufficient disk space (see
  163. "System Requirements and Limitations" for disk space requirements).
  164. The default location for installation of the Acrobat Reader software is 
  165. the following directory:
  166.  
  167. * For SunOS and HP:  /usr/Acrobat3
  168.  
  169. * For Solaris 2:  /opt/Acrobat3
  170.  
  171. * For IRIX:  /opt/Acrobat3
  172.  
  173. * For AIX:  /usr/lpp/Acrobat3
  174.  
  175. If there is insufficient space in this partition, choose another directory 
  176. within a different partition.  Use the df command to determine the 
  177. available space within a file system partition containing a particular 
  178. directory.  Type df (or df -k) followed by the name of the directory in 
  179. which you want to install the software.  For example, on SunOS type the 
  180. following command:
  181.  
  182.     # df /usr
  183.  
  184.     Filesystem  kbytes    used     avail   capacity  Mounted on
  185.     /dev/sd0g   207295   98377     88189        53%        /usr
  186.  
  187. There are 207,295 kilobytes (about 207 megabytes) in this partition and 
  188. about 88 megabytes available, which is enough disk space to install the 
  189. Acrobat Reader software. See your system documentation for more 
  190. information on the df command.
  191.  
  192.  
  193. INSTALLING THE ACROBAT READER SOFTWARE
  194. ======================================
  195.  
  196. Acrobat Reader software is distributed on CD-ROM or from the Adobe Web 
  197. site.  This section contains instructions for installing the software after 
  198. you have downloaded the Acrobat Reader files or mounted a CD-ROM containing
  199. the Acrobat Reader files.
  200.  
  201. If you have downloaded the Acrobat Reader files from the Adobe Web site, 
  202. you must first uncompress and untar the files before beginning the 
  203. installation.  Instructions for downloading and uncompressing the files 
  204. are available on the Adobe Web site.
  205.  
  206.  
  207. The installation script prompts you to answer questions regarding the 
  208. installation, such as where you want to place the Reader files.  
  209. Reasonable default values are provided.  Press Return to select the 
  210. recommended defaults, or enter your own values.
  211.  
  212. To run the installation script:
  213.  
  214. 1. Change to the directory containing the installation script.  If you are 
  215.    installing Acrobat Reader from a CD-ROM, change to the appropriate 
  216.    directory on the CD-ROM.
  217.  
  218. 2.  Start the installation script.  The filename of the script may be 
  219.     uppercase or lowercase depending on your system for example:
  220.  
  221.      # ./install
  222.  
  223. 3.  Follow the instructions that appear on your screen.
  224.  
  225. If you make a mistake, you can do either of the following: 
  226.  
  227. *  Exit at different points in the procedure.
  228.  
  229. *  Press the interrupt key sequence (Control+C on most UNIX systems) to 
  230.    cancel the installation.
  231.  
  232. When the installation is complete, a message appears indicating that you 
  233. have installed the software successfully. Acrobat Reader is now installed. 
  234.  
  235.  
  236. Acrobat Reader-installed files
  237. ------------------------------
  238.  
  239. The installation script installs the following files and directories in
  240. the installation directory:
  241.  
  242. * The bin directory contains the acroread launch script.
  243.  
  244. * The Reader directory contains the help and ReadMe files and platform 
  245.   specific files.
  246.  
  247. * The Fonts directory contains bundled fonts.
  248.  
  249. * The Browsers directory contains the Netscape plug-in, if supported, and 
  250.   an example script for starting Acrobat within Netscape.
  251.  
  252.  
  253. Integrating icons into the OpenWindows desktop
  254. ----------------------------------------------
  255.  
  256. Acrobat Reader provides a script that integrates Acrobat Reader icons into 
  257. your OpenWindows desktop.  You can run this script as root or from your 
  258. login account.  If you are logged in as root, the icons are installed for 
  259. all users.  If you run the script as a normal user, the icons are installed 
  260. for your use only.
  261.  
  262. To integrate icons into the desktop:
  263.  
  264. 1  In a UNIX shell window, as root, locate the acroread.deskinstall script:
  265.  
  266.    # cd <installdir>/Reader/desktop/olwm
  267.  
  268. 2  Run the script:
  269.  
  270.    # ./acroread.deskinstall
  271.  
  272. 3  Exit from OpenWindows, and log back on for the changes to take effect.

  274.  
  275. Creating links to the launch script
  276. -----------------------------------
  277.  
  278. You should always start Acrobat Reader using its launch script. To make it 
  279. easier to use the script, you can create links to the launch script 
  280. directory. The following example creates a link in the /usr/bin 
  281. directory:
  282.  
  283.     # ln -s /opt/Acrobat3/bin/acroread /usr/bin/acroread
  284.  
  285.  
  286. STARTING ACROBAT READER
  287. ===========================
  288.  
  289. Now that you have completed the installation procedure, you are ready to 
  290. start the Acrobat Reader application.  Always start the Reader application 
  291. by using its launch script.
  292.  
  293. If you created symbolic links, and the alternative launch script directory 
  294. is in the search path set by the PATH environment variable, you can start 
  295. Acrobat Reader by typing the following:
  296.  
  297.     % acroread
  298.  
  299. If you did not create symbolic links to the launch scripts, type the 
  300. following command to start Acrobat Reader:
  301.  
  302.     % <installdir>/bin/acroread
  303.  
  304. To launch Acrobat Reader so that it appears as an icon on your desktop, 
  305. type the following command:
  306.  
  307.     % acroread -iconic
  308.  
  309. To view one or more files, give the filenames as command-line parameters.  
  310. For example, to view /share/docs/annual_report.pdf and 
  311. /user/bob/Schedule.pdf, type:
  312.  
  313.     % acroread /share/docs/annual_report.pdf /user/bob/Schedule.pdf
  314.  
  315. By default, only one Reader process can be running.  If you type acroread 
  316. <filename> when Reader is already running, the currently running version of 
  317. Reader becomes active and displays the specified file.
  318.  
  319. If you prefer that a new version of Reader be launched each time you start 
  320. Reader, type the following command:
  321.  
  322.     % acroread +useFrontEndProgram
  323.     
  324. For more information on Acrobat Reader command-line options, type 
  325. one of the following commands:
  326.  
  327.     % acroread -help
  328.     % acroread -helpall
  329.     
  330.  
  331.  
  332. Converting PDF to PostScript
  333. ----------------------------
  334.  
  335. You can convert PDF files to level 1 or level 2 PostScript files from the 
  336. command line if you are running the X Window System.  Command-line printing 
  337. supports only the standard page size of 8.5 by 11 inches; it does not 
  338. support shrink-to-fit or scaling commands.  If your document contains 
  339. custom page sizes (such as 11 by 14 inches), open the file in Acrobat 
  340. Reader and then print it or use Acrobat Exchange which has enhanced
  341. command-line printing capabilities.
  342.  
  343. To convert a PDF file by piping it into Reader and then sending the output 
  344. to a file, type the following:
  345.  
  346.     % cat sample.pdf | acroread -toPostScript > sample.ps 
  347.  
  348. To convert one or more PDF files, such as sample1.pdf and sample2.pdf, 
  349. into PostScript files and place these PostScript files into the directory 
  350. <dir>, type the following:
  351.  
  352.  % acroread -toPostScript sample1.pdf sample2.pdf <dir>
  353.  
  354. To convert a series of files expressed as both a PDF filename and a 
  355. corresponding PostScript filename (or pairs), type the following:
  356.  
  357.     % acroread -toPostScript -pairs pdf_file_1 ps_file_1 ...
  358.  
  359. To convert a PDF file to a level 2 PostScript file, type the following:
  360.  
  361.     % acroread -toPostScript -level2 pdf_file_1
  362.  
  363.  
  364. Setting up Acrobat as an inline viewer for Netscape
  365. --------------------------------------------------
  366.  
  367. Acrobat 3 contains an example script that starts Netscape and allows you 
  368. to view PDF files inline instead of using an Acrobat viewer as a helper 
  369. application. The example script is located in <installdir>/Browsers.
  370.  
  371. Note: Since Netscape does not support plug-ins on an AIX workstation, you 
  372. cannot use the Acrobat plug-in or the Netscape script to view PDF file inline 
  373. on an AIX system.
  374.  
  375. To run the Netscape script, change directory to <installdir>/Browsers 
  376. and type 
  377.  
  378.     % ./netscape
  379.  
  380.  
  381. REMOVING ACROBAT READER SOFTWARE
  382. ================================
  383.  
  384. You can remove the Acrobat Reader software by manually deleting the files 
  385. and directories that were created during the installation procedure. 
  386.  
  387. To remove Acrobat Reader:
  388.  
  389. 1.  Enter the following commands to remove Reader from the installation 
  390.     directory:
  391.  
  392.     % cd <installdir>
  393.     % rm -rf Reader
  394.     % rm bin/acroread
  395.  
  396. 2.  To remove the symbolic link to the launch script, delete the file 
  397.     /usr/bin/acroread:
  398.  
  399.     % cd /usr/bin
  400.     % rm acroread
  401.  
  402.  
  403. TROUBLESHOOTING
  404. ===============
  405.  
  406. This section describes Acrobat Reader error messages and provides general 
  407. troubleshooting information.
  408.  
  409.  
  410. Command to launch Acrobat Reader not found
  411. ------------------------------------------
  412.  
  413. Error message: acroread -command not found
  414.  
  415. Cause: Either the Acrobat Reader launch script is not on your search path 
  416. or the launch script you are trying to execute is actually a symbolic link 
  417. to a file that does not exist.
  418.  
  419. Solution: First, make sure your search path has been updated by typing the 
  420. following command:
  421.  
  422.     % rehash
  423.     
  424. If the launch script still does not work, locate the file that executes 
  425. Acrobat Reader:
  426.  
  427.     % ls -l acroread
  428.  
  429. If the results indicate that acroread is actually a symbolic link to 
  430. another file (<file>), type the following:
  431.  
  432.     % ls -l <file> 
  433.  
  434.  
  435. Permission denied to launch Acrobat Reader
  436. ------------------------------------------
  437.  
  438. Error message: acroread: Permission denied
  439.  
  440. Cause: One or more files have their permissions set incorrectly. 
  441.  
  442. Solution: Examine the permissions on the Reader launch script to make sure 
  443. you have proper execute privileges for <installdir>/bin/acroread.
  444.  
  445.  
  446. Netscape launches my Acrobat viewer as a helper application instead of 
  447. viewing PDF files inline
  448. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  449.  
  450. Error: I set up Netscape to view PDF files inline, but my Acrobat viewer 
  451. still appears as a helper application.
  452.  
  453. Solution: Perform the following tasks:
  454.  
  455. 1. Start your Netscape application.
  456.  
  457. 2. Choose General Preferences from the Options menu.
  458.  
  459. 3. In the General Preferences window that appears, click the Helpers tab.
  460.  
  461. 4. If necessary, scroll through the list and select application/pdf.
  462.  
  463. 5. Click Delete.
  464.  
  465. 6. Click OK.
  466.  
  467. 7. Click Save Options in the Options menu.
  468.  
  469. 8. Restart your Netscape application.
  470.
